India-Ghana Partnership Day

The High Commission of India, Accra celebrated India-Ghana Partnership Day on Friday, 28 March 2025 at the India House. The event witnessed the gracious presence of Hon. Ms. Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Chief Director Mr. Vitus Langmane representing Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Chief Director Ms. Lilian Baeka representing the Greater Accra Regional Minister. Around 250 ITEC alumni, Member(s) of Parliament, Ghanaian dignitaries and senior officials, friends from the media and prominent Indian nationals also attended the evening Reception hosted by the High Commissioner to mark the occasion.

  1. India-Ghana Partnership Day is celebrated every year in recognition of the long-standing developmental partnership between India and Ghana. H.E. Mr. Manish Gupta, High Commissioner of India in his welcome address highlighted the importance of the ITEC programme in enhancing bilateral ties between India and Ghana. 
  1. The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) instituted in 1964 by the Government of India towards advancing South-South cooperation is one of the oldest institutionalized arrangements for international capacity building. Over 200,000 officials from 160+ countries in Asia, Africa, East Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Pacific and Small Island countries are beneficiaries of the programme so far.
  1. The approach of ITEC Programme is human centric and India’s offer of development model and grant assistance are guided by the developmental requirements of partner countries. The ITEC program aims to promote capacity building and knowledge sharing between India and other countries, particularly in areas of development and economic growth. The offerings under ITEC have been vastly expanded and advanced to reflect an economically emergent and technologically advanced India while remaining in sync with its heritage and ancient knowledge, such as Yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda. Presently, ITEC annually offers nearly 10,000 fully funded in-person training opportunities through nearly 400 courses at 100+ eminent institutes in India. It gives a unique opportunity to ITEC Alumni to reconnect with each other.
  1. The Government of India this year has provided over 400 fully financed slots in Ghana this year towards higher education for graduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programs and training under the ITEC programme in health, governance, environment, ICT, and other disciplines of various duration and defense training. Cumulatively, over 4000 Ghanaian nationals are beneficiaries of these programmes.

Over the past one-and-a-half decades, several signature projects have been undertaken in Ghana under the Government of India’s grant assistance, Lines of Credit (LOCs) and Buyers' Credit facility extended through the EXIM Bank of India. These projects include the Jubilee House, the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, the Foreign Policy Training Institute, as well as initiatives in agro-harvesting, fisheries, rural electrification, and the recently completed Tema-Mpakadan railway line project.
  1. The High Commissioner reaffirmed India’s commitment towards deepening and expanding its partnership with Ghana in all sectors, working towards the adoption of cost-effective technologies, and sharing best practices and expertise through capacity building.
  1. The event also witnessed vibrant cultural performances. ITEC Alumni shared their experience in India and their learnings that are beneficial for Ghana’s development. Besides ITEC alumni, the event was also attended by alumni of various other programs such as the ICCR scholarships, culture and sports exchanges, and prominent members of the Indian diaspora.
  1. Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development expressed appreciation of the Government of India for the ITEC programme and the development partnership. She hoped that the bilateral cooperation between the two countries would strengthen further.
